Ukrainian Military Personnel Abroad Can Rejoin the Armed Forces: A Path to Return.
Pathway for Ukrainian Soldiers Abroad to Rejoin the Ranks
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian military personnel currently residing abroad have a voluntary pathway to return to service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). To initiate this process, a service member must physically return to Ukraine and present themselves to the State Border Guard Service. Upon return, the individual is assigned to a reserve battalion, and their status of special release from regular service (SRS) is revoked. Service resumes with a clean slate, offering a genuine opportunity for a fresh start within the military. This initiative is part of broader efforts to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities during a time of ongoing conflict.
Consular offices abroad can provide assistance in resolving logistical issues related to the return, offering information and support for the journey back to Ukraine and the reintegration into service. Notably, service members who have committed a first-time offense may be exempt from criminal liability if they agree to resume their military duties. This provision creates a significant incentive for those wishing to return to the AFU.
Guarantees for a Safe Return
Furthermore, detention is not applied to military personnel who return voluntarily, provided there is no existing court order for their arrest. No fines are imposed on those who choose to come back. As stated by a Territorial Recruitment Center (TRC):
“Imprisonment only occurs when a person categorically refuses to continue their service.”
Consequently, returning to service can be a beneficial and secure step for Ukrainian military personnel currently abroad.
This program has the potential to significantly impact the reinforcement of the AFU's ranks. By supporting returning soldiers and offering a chance to avoid criminal consequences for certain offenses, the initiative may encourage a greater number of volunteers. This, in turn, could strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and provide new opportunities for those seeking to once again be part of the armed forces. Therefore, this return mechanism represents a crucial element in the strategic planning for the AFU's personnel needs.
