Frontline Worker Pay: Why Salary Multipliers Fall Short, Says Governor Vitaliy Kim.
Improving Working Conditions in Frontline Regions
According to Novyny.live: Vitaliy Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, has stressed the urgent need to improve working conditions and salaries for those employed in Ukraine's frontline territories. He stated that while salary multipliers have already been introduced to boost pay, these measures are insufficient to guarantee decent working standards for these critical workers.
For context, the national average salary in Ukraine as of February 2026 is 27,500 hryvnias. A comparison of regional capitals shows the highest average wages are in:
- Kyiv — 32,500 hryvnias,
- Lviv — 30,000 hryvnias,
- Uzhhorod — 27,500 hryvnias.
In contrast, Mykolaiv ranks among the lowest, with an average salary of just 21,900 hryvnias. Salaries in other regional centers also vary significantly:
- Chernivtsi — 26,000 hryvnias,
- Rivne — 25,000 hryvnias,
- Cherkasy — 24,300 hryvnias,
- Poltava — 23,000 hryvnias,
- Zhytomyr and Zaporizhzhia — 22,500 hryvnias each,
- Kropyvnytskyi — 21,500 hryvnias,
- Chernihiv — 21,500 hryvnias.
The lowest average salaries are found in Kherson at 21,000 hryvnias and Sumy at 20,000 hryvnias.
“We must secure better rights and conditions, first and foremost regarding the salaries of people who, defying logic and safety concerns, remain and work in frontline territories.”
Vitaliy Kim
The issue of low wages and poor working conditions in frontline areas is a crucial component of Ukraine's socio-economic landscape. Amidst ongoing war and constant risks to life, ensuring dignified conditions for these workers has become a state priority. Kim's statement could serve as a catalyst for further action to enhance social protections and improve the living standards of those who risk their health and lives for their country.
