President Zelenskyy Honors Disqualified Skeleton Athlete with Order of Liberty.
President Zelenskyy Meets with Skeleton Athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych
According to Novyny.live: During a meeting in Munich, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented the Order of Liberty to skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych for his sporting achievements. The athlete was joined by his father, Mykhailo Heraskevych. Vladyslav is a member of Ukraine's national Olympic team, while his father serves as the acting coach for the national skeleton squad.
A 'Helmet of Remembrance' and Olympic Disqualification
In preparation for the 2026 Olympics, Vladyslav Heraskevych created a 'helmet of remembrance' featuring images of 22 Ukrainian athletes who have been killed. Despite his efforts, he was disqualified from the 2026 Olympic Games specifically for wearing this helmet. The Court of Arbitration for Sport later dismissed Heraskevych's appeal, delivering another blow to Ukrainian sport. This case highlights the difficult intersection of athletic competition and political expression for Ukrainian athletes on the world stage.
President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of honoring the fallen athletes, stating: 'Ukraine will have its champions and Olympians, but the most important thing Ukraine has is its people. Those for whom truth and the memory of the athletes—male and female—killed by Russia are important, and who will never again be able to compete in sporting events because of Russian aggression.'
The meeting served as a significant gesture of support for Ukrainian athletes during a challenging period. This event underscores not only the achievements of Ukrainian sportspeople but also the critical importance of commemorating the war's victims. Heraskevych's disqualification over memorial symbolism illustrates the complex hurdles Ukrainian athletes face in international competition, making the presidential meeting a powerful act of solidarity and recognition for their fight for truth and remembrance.
