Buckwheat harvest down by 15%: why experts urge not to panic.
According to inkorr.com: In Ukraine, the buckwheat harvest has decreased by 15% compared to last year, but there is no threat of a shortage. According to the director of the 'Millers of Ukraine' association, Rodion Rybychynskyi, the price increase of buckwheat has caused an artificial hype in the media.
Farmers' economic choice
The reduction in production volumes is related to farmers' choice, as buckwheat is a less profitable crop compared to sunflower, soy, or rapeseed. It is not always profitable to grow it, even considering the export duty.
'Some newspaper or Telegram channel started to panic about buckwheat prices, and this provoked a real price increase due to pseudo-demand,' - said Rybychynskyi.
Similar panic regarding buckwheat
Similar panic movements in the buckwheat market occur from time to time. According to the expert, the primary factor of demand for buckwheat is diabetes, so ordinary consumers should not panic. There are plenty of other grain crops in Ukraine that can replace buckwheat in the diet.
As Rodion Rybychynskyi noted, the situation in the buckwheat market may seem difficult, but it is important to remember that there are many alternative products in Ukraine that can serve similar functions in nutrition. This underscores the importance of diversity in the diet and the resilience of the food system.
