Why Hungary's Orban May Hesitate to Veto Ukraine's EU Membership.
Ukraine's Path to European Union Membership
According to UATV: Despite Hungary's potential to block the move, Prime Minister Viktor Orban may ultimately refrain from vetoing Ukraine's accession to the European Union. This is largely due to the significant pressure from a majority of EU member states. Ukraine continues to actively implement the necessary reforms for membership, including the critical task of integrating EU law into its national legislation.
The head of the Ukrainian parliament's committee on foreign policy and inter-parliamentary cooperation, Oleksandr Merezhko, emphasized that Ukraine is doing everything possible to adopt European norms. He stated,
“We are doing everything possible, and even the impossible, to integrate European Union law into our legislation as fully as we can.”
The Current State of Accession Negotiations
Merezhko also noted that, theoretically, Hungary could veto Ukraine's EU bid. However, he believes Orban
“fears being isolated in the minority and fears being seen as playing into the hands of the Kremlin dictator.”Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing in Ukraine about a proposal for partial EU membership by 2027, highlighting the country's strong drive for integration into European structures. The EU accession process is a complex, multi-year negotiation that requires unanimous approval from all existing member states.
Given these factors, the situation regarding Ukraine's potential EU accession remains dynamic and requires close observation.
This development underscores the importance of international support for Ukraine's European ambitions. It also demonstrates how the domestic politics of individual EU member states can significantly influence the pace and outcome of enlargement negotiations. The stance of Hungary and other nations will be crucial in determining how swiftly Ukraine can advance toward membership and successfully implement the reforms critical for meeting European standards.
