The UK will have the deepest swimming pool in the world: why it is being built.
The deepest swimming pool in the world is coming to the UK
According to The Sun: The deepest swimming pool in the world will soon open in the UK, but you won’t be able to sign up for swimming lessons.
This new pool will be part of the Aerohub zone at Cornwall Airport in Newquay.
The deepest swimming pool in the world will be opened in the UK. It will open near Cornwall Airport.Innovative project Blue Abyss
The project, known as Blue Abyss, was announced back in 2021. It will have a budget of 150 million pounds and will include the largest and deepest swimming pool in the world.
However, the pool will not be open for public visits — it will serve as a testing base for new underwater technologies, including advanced robotics.
The project was designed by British architect Robin Partington, known for the building The Gherkin.
The dimensions of the pool will be 40 by 50 meters, and its water volume will equal 17 Olympic swimming pools.
(This is equivalent to 168 million cups of tea).
The depth of the pool will reach 50 meters — in comparison, regular public pools are about 1.8 meters deep.
The project is supported by British astronaut Major Tim Peake, who noted that the pool will be used for astronaut training at Spaceport Cornwall.
“This project will become an important national asset… helping to expand our knowledge of how people and technology can function in extreme conditions, for the benefit of society and the planet,”
Collaboration with NASA
This year, the project received support from NASA. A representative of Blue Abyss stated:
“NASA and Blue Abyss will collaborate to explore innovative solutions for preparing and conducting research that addresses challenges in low Earth orbit, on the Moon, and on Mars.”
The pool may also be useful for directors planning underwater filming.
The official opening date has not yet been confirmed, but work has already begun.
Although the pool will not be open for visits, you will be able to visit the airport from which regular flights depart across the UK.
Alternatives for underwater enthusiasts
If you are looking for the deepest swimming pool available to guests, you should visit Dubai. Deep Dive Dubai has a depth of around 60 meters and is used by divers for training, as well as by children wanting swimming lessons.
There is also a famous “submerged city” area that can be explored with a guide underwater.
For those who want to visit the longest swimming pool in Europe, we recommend going to France.
This is also where the largest wave pool in the world is located.
Blue Abyss
The Blue Abyss project promises to be a significant achievement in the field of underwater technologies, closely collaborating with NASA and supporting the advancement of scientific research. Although access to the pool will be limited, its impact on technological innovation could positively influence research in space and underwater environments. Read also
