According to The Sun: In Downey, California, there is the oldest operating McDonald’s, opened in 1953.

In 1994, the restaurant was closed due to an earthquake, but reopened in 1996 now featuring a museum and souvenir shop.

This establishment has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, and many interior and exterior elements still remind of the 1950s.

Guests are greeted by a 60-foot neon McDonald's sign, erected in honor of the original mascot “Speedee,” which is still depicted on drink cups in this restaurant.

“Speedee” was replaced by Ronald McDonald in 1967 – the clown from “McDonaldland,” who we all know and love today.

The restaurant’s exterior is designed in the “Googie” style, popular in the 40s and 50s, influenced by car culture and space themes.

Inside, visitors can appreciate the retro interior, including original furniture and food packaging.

Guests can order food just like they did before and purchase merchandise: t-shirts, jackets, socks, hats, and pins.

Although the menu is similar to other McDonald’s restaurants, here you can taste the deep-fried apple pie, which is not available in American establishments.

The restaurant was founded by Roger Williams and Burdette Lendon, who bought the rights to operate it. This happened before Ray Kroc became part of the company in 1954.
