New Rail Link Connects Portugal and Singapore

According to Novyny.live: A newly launched train service linking Portugal to Singapore has claimed the title of the longest railway route on the planet. The journey spans 21 days, covers 11,600 miles (approximately 18,670 kilometers), and passes through 13 different countries. Departing from Lagos, Portugal, the train ultimately arrives in Singapore.

Along the way, the train makes stops in several major cities, including:

  • Paris
  • Beijing
  • Bangkok

Travelers must secure seven separate visas to complete the trip, highlighting the international nature of the route. The total fare is roughly £1,006 (approximately €1,160).

The itinerary also includes bus transfers between Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as between Malaysia and Singapore, adding variety and complexity to the journey. Previously, the longest rail route was considered to be the service from London to Singapore. This new record-breaking connection was made possible by the opening of a railway line between Laos and China, which has significantly expanded rail transport options in the region.

Impact of the New Route on Tourism

This new rail service not only sets a world record but also opens up fresh possibilities for passengers eager to experience multiple countries and cultures during a single trip.

The route is expected to have a major impact on the travel industry by offering a unique opportunity to explore several nations in one journey. Thanks to infrastructure developments—especially the new rail link between Laos and China—new doors are opening for international travel, potentially boosting regional economies. It may also increase interest in rail travel as an eco-friendly and convenient mode of transportation.
