ZAES was disconnected from electricity for more than a day for the second time in a month - IAEA.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZAES), which is under the control of Russian occupiers, lost connection to the only backup power transmission line. The disconnection lasted more than a day and happened for the second time this month. This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to IAEA representatives, the cause of the disconnection was "an unspecified damage on the opposite bank of the Dnipro." The power transmission line was disconnected for more than 26 hours.

The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, stated that as a result of the loss of power supply, ZAES became dependent on the single external source of electricity, making it impossible to ensure reactor cooling and other critical nuclear safety functions.

Previously, ZAES operated 4 lines with a voltage of 750 kV and 6 lines with a voltage of 330 kV. However, now the station receives electricity only from one single line with a voltage of 750 kV.

According to Rafael Grossi, this situation, when a nuclear plant loses power, has become the norm during this devastating war. He also emphasized that the nuclear safety situation at ZAES remains unstable.

The IAEA recommends not restarting the reactors at ZAES while the war continues. The agency is also demanding that Russia leave the plant's territory and de-occupy it.
