MI6 Chief: Putin Intentionally Prolongs War to Shift Its Cost to the Population.
According to ТСН: The head of the British secret intelligence service MI6, Bletch Metreveli, emphasized the "serious threat posed by the Russian Federation" in her first public address.
She accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of deliberately dragging out negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, complicating US President Donald Trump's efforts to reach an agreement by the end of the year.
"We continue to face the threat of an aggressive, expansionist, and revisionist Russia that seeks to conquer Ukraine and NATO members," said Bletch Metreveli during her first public speech since becoming head of MI6 in September.
She also noted:
"He is prolonging the negotiations and shifting the cost of the war onto his own population."
The head of MI6 assured that the United Kingdom will continue to pressure Putin while supporting Ukraine.
"Putin should have no doubt, our support continues. The pressure we exert on behalf of Ukraine will persist," she added.
Metreveli's speech indicates that the assessment of Western security officials regarding Putin, who has no intention of participating in a ceasefire in Ukraine anytime soon, has remained unchanged, even after recent negotiations between the Kremlin and American representatives.
Last month, her predecessor Richard Moore also stated that the latest intelligence supports this view.
Bletch Metreveli became the first woman to head the British foreign intelligence agency, taking over on October 1, succeeding Richard Moore.
It is worth noting that President Zelensky revealed key disagreements with Russia regarding the ceasefire.
Metreveli's speech highlights the concerns of Western leaders regarding Russia's intentions in Ukraine and the importance of continuing support for Ukrainian efforts. In an environment where international negotiating initiatives face complications, the intelligence chief's words shed light on the seriousness of the situation and the active actions of the United Kingdom in support of Ukraine.
