Threat from Space: China and the USA Prepare to Stop 'Very Dangerous Asteroid'.

China and the USA are working on monitoring the asteroid 2024 YR4, which could collide with Earth in 2032.
The asteroid, estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters in diameter, was discovered in December 2024 and added to the list of high-risk asteroids compiled by the European Space Agency. The probability of collision is estimated at 2.2%.
'The probability of collision is very low, but its consequences could be local. The situation is so serious that it draws the attention of the international community regarding planetary defense,' reports ESA.
Determining the size and trajectory of the asteroid is a key task for astronomers as it allows assessing the threat it may pose. However, current estimates are based on the light reflected from it, which can lead to misleading results due to its brightness and dimness.
To obtain more accurate data about the asteroid, it will also be monitored by the James Webb Telescope in the infrared spectrum. However, the Time for observations is limited, as the asteroid will disappear from view by 2028.
Considering the seriousness of this threat, countries around the world are taking measures. China, for example, is forming a planetary defense team and developing mission plans to deflect hazardous asteroids. A similar plan is also being developed by NASA for its DART mission scheduled for 2022.
If the asteroid becomes a threat, NASA and China might change its trajectory to divert it from its orbit.
