Situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

According to UATV: External power has been restored to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant after yet another blackout. This marks the tenth loss of off-site electricity supply since the beginning of 2026. Previously, on July 3, 2023, the plant experienced a complete blackout, cutting it off from external power sources and forcing a switch to backup diesel generators.

The Zaporizhzhia plant has been under Russian occupation for over four years. Officials from the state-owned enterprise 'NNEGC Energoatom' stated that 'the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP once again lost external power supply and had to rely on reserve diesel generators.' They further emphasized that 'this record is unprecedented and highlights the critical state of nuclear safety at the facility.'

Nuclear Safety Risks

Despite the restoration of electricity, risks to nuclear and radiation safety remain high. As Energoatom representatives noted, 'as long as the Zaporizhzhia NPP remains under Russian occupation, the dangers to nuclear and radiation safety persist.' This situation has sparked serious concern among experts and the international community.

While the return of external power to the Zaporizhzhia plant is a positive development, it does not diminish the security threats tied to the facility. Repeated blackouts point to the instability at the site, which continues to be controlled by occupying forces. Experts stress the need for international monitoring to ensure nuclear safety in the region, as the risks could affect not only Ukraine but also neighboring countries.
