Smetanin’s Resignation from Ukroboronprom

According to Espreso.tv: Herman Smetanin has announced his resignation as head of Ukroboronprom, without disclosing the reasons behind his decision. He led the state defense conglomerate twice: first from 2023 to 2024, and again starting in August 2025. Smetanin also served as Minister of Strategic Industries in Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal’s cabinet from 2024 to 2025. This leadership change comes at a critical juncture for Ukraine’s defense sector, which is under immense pressure due to the ongoing war.

During his tenure at Ukroboronprom, a tragic incident occurred. On the night of July 6, a fire broke out at an ammunition depot in Vyshneve, triggering secondary explosions. The blaze lasted for several hours and caused extensive damage, including the destruction of residential buildings on nearby streets. In response, Ukroboronprom dismissed the heads of two state-owned enterprises for violating ammunition storage regulations.

Gratitude and Challenges Ahead

Herman Smetanin: 'I especially want to thank my colleagues, with whom I often had to find solutions under extremely tight deadlines.'

He also wished the new leader and the entire Ukroboronprom team 'continued success in fulfilling the state mission.' This shift in leadership comes amid serious challenges facing Ukraine’s defense industry.

Smetanin’s resignation occurs at a difficult time for the Ukrainian defense sector, which is grappling with numerous issues, including:

  • ensuring national security;
  • boosting production efficiency.

The ammunition depot fire highlighted the critical importance of adhering to safety standards in this field. The new head of Ukroboronprom is expected to face the urgent task of reforming and modernizing enterprises to enhance their performance under demanding conditions. This could be a pivotal step in equipping Ukraine with the resources needed for defense amid the ongoing armed conflict.
