A Landmark U.S.-Russia Nuclear Pact Expires: The Global Arms Race Enters a New Phase.
The Treaty's Expiration
According to TSN.ua: In February 2023, a pivotal nuclear arms control agreement between the United States and Russia, which had been in force for over 50 years, reached its end. This pact was a cornerstone of international security, given that the U.S. and Russia together possess roughly 83% of the world's stockpiled nuclear warheads. Following the treaty's lapse, Russia declared its readiness to adhere to the limits of the last remaining strategic arms treaty, New START (START III), provided the United States does the same.
The Global Nuclear Landscape
Amid this shifting landscape, U.S. nuclear warhead stockpiles have decreased by 1.3% over the past five years. However, China is actively and rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal. China's number of warheads has grown from 350 to 600 since 2020, and projections suggest its arsenal could reach 1,000 warheads by 2030.
Other nations are also accelerating their nuclear programs. India, with 180 warheads, has seen a 20% increase in its stockpile over the last five years, while Pakistan continues to advance its own capabilities. This global proliferation is creating a more volatile and complex security environment, demanding urgent attention and dialogue from the international community on safeguarding global stability.

While tensions between the U.S. and Russia persist, the accelerating arms buildups in China, India, and Pakistan present new and distinct challenges to international stability. This situation necessitates a concerted global effort to revive and modernize arms control frameworks, a critical step to prevent escalation and ensure planetary security. The end of this treaty marks a significant setback for the post-Cold War arms control regime.
