Trump spoke negatively about Europe after meeting with Putin
US President Donald Trump made negative comments about Ukraine and Europe after negotiating with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This was reported by the Financial Times.
European leaders expected Trump to call for EU funding to restore Ukraine and deploy troops to support a peace agreement, in which the EU declined to participate.
However, European politicians are disappointed by their exclusion from negotiations between Russia and the US regarding Ukraine and fear additional security and reconstruction costs for the country after the war.
It is also worth noting that Trump announced the start of negotiations to end the war soon after his conversation with Putin, which was unexpected for Europe.
"Americans do not see Europe as an actor in geopolitical issues related to this war. This is a test of unity for us... Trump sees us as a source of funding. And, frankly, we do not understand what role he is assigned in terms of money involvement," said a senior EU official.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that in conditions of uncertainty and change, it is important for Europeans to understand what is happening.
Despite this, the EU continues its efforts to find someone with direct access to Trump for negotiations regarding Ukraine.
However, during a briefing in the Oval Office, Trump avoided directly answering questions about Ukraine's role in negotiations with Russia regarding the end of the war.
"That's an interesting question. I think they should make peace. People are dying; it's a horrible war, and I think they should make peace. That's what I think," said the head of the White House.
Trump also expressed doubts about the possibility of returning to the borders of 2014 and Ukraine's NATO membership.
It is worth noting that Trump had a "long and productive" conversation with Putin and announced a call to Zelensky.
