Russia's Domestic Troubles and the Belarus Threat
Zelensky also highlighted worsening issues with fuel supplies, military logistics, and governance in occupied Crimea. He stated that
“this data shows that, under clear Russian influence, Belarus is continuing preparations for a potential expansion of aggression against Ukraine.”This raises concerns, as the situation in the neighboring country could impact regional security.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian president pointed to the internal situation in Russia, where public anxiety has exceeded 50%. According to polls, 66% of Russian citizens describe their financial situation as difficult, and over 80% expect a major economic crisis. Zelensky emphasized that
“the Russian occupation administration admits it cannot resolve the problems created by our sanctions.”
Addressing the threat from Belarus, Zelensky asserted that “Belarus knows what steps it must take to achieve peace.” He called for a halt to the construction of border infrastructure that could enable aggression, warning that such developments threaten regional stability.
Zelensky’s statements underscore the seriousness of the threats emanating from Belarus and Russia, and point to Ukraine’s active preparations for potential military action from its neighbors. The development of border infrastructure is part of a broader security strategy, reflecting Ukraine’s readiness to respond to emerging challenges. The situation in Russia, including rising public unease, may also indicate regional instability that must be factored into future security assessments.
