Zelenskyy Tasks Poklad with SBU Purge: Who Will Be Removed from the Security Service.
Cleansing the Security Service of Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: On February 16, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy assigned Oleksandr Poklad to lead a purge of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). This directive comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen the institution and combat corrupt elements within its ranks. The move underscores the government's commitment to reforming its security apparatus during a time of national crisis.
Oleksandr Poklad, who serves as First Deputy Head of the SBU, has been tasked with ensuring that only those loyal to Ukraine's interests remain in the service. In his statement, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for decisive action and the creation of a strong, effective security service capable of meeting current challenges.
'I expect results,' the president noted, stressing the critical importance of this process.
Acting Head of the SBU Yevhen Khmarа and the service's former head, Vasyl Malyuk, are also involved in this significant phase of reforming Ukraine's Security Service.
Reform Context
This step is part of a wider process of reforming state institutions in Ukraine, particularly amid the country's active efforts to combat corruption and strengthen national security. The SBU purge aims not only to improve the service's effectiveness but also to bolster public trust in law enforcement agencies. Such internal reforms are seen as vital for maintaining resilience and legitimacy while Ukraine defends itself against external aggression.
