Zelenskyy Directs Umerov to Engage Middle East and Turkey in Peace Talks.
International Partners Sought for Peace Process
According to TSN.ua: In a Saturday address on February 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the head of the negotiation group, Rustem Umerov, to involve Middle Eastern nations and Turkey in efforts to settle the war in Ukraine. This diplomatic push comes as Ukraine seeks to broaden the coalition supporting its vision for a just peace. Zelenskyy stressed that any peace negotiations would be closely coordinated with European partners.
Emphasizing the critical importance of international support for the peace process, Zelenskyy stated that
"helping more"is a key aspect of achieving stability. He noted that
"Europe was involved in all processes and only grew stronger,"underscoring the necessity for active European participation in the talks. The President also expressed confidence that
"Ukraine will certainly do everything necessary for this and will definitely not be an obstacle to peace."
Outlook for Future Meetings
Following this directive, Zelenskyy has meetings planned with European partners next week. The head of state emphasized that
"the next meeting must be made substantive, this is possible."He also pointed out that
"the reason for the absence of truly significant results lies precisely with the Russians,"highlighting the complexity of the negotiation process given Russia's stance.
This decision reflects Ukraine's strategic approach to peace talks, where an emphasis on international backing and coordination with European allies plays a pivotal role. Engaging Middle Eastern countries and Turkey could unlock new avenues for diplomatic efforts and expand the circle of influence on the peace settlement process. Turkey, which has maintained relations with both sides, has previously acted as a mediator. Simultaneously, the President's position regarding Russia indicates that negotiations are likely to be arduous and will require substantial effort to achieve meaningful progress.
