Kremlin Spokesman Details Conditions for Putin-Zelenskyy Meeting.
Proposed Meeting Between Zelenskyy and Putin
According to TSN.ua: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on January 30. Putin expressed a willingness to engage in talks, but stipulated they must be held in Moscow. This development comes amid ongoing tensions and a stalled diplomatic process between the two nations.
President Zelenskyy, however, has ruled out the possibility of holding direct negotiations on the territory of either Russia or Belarus.
“It is absolutely impossible for me to meet with Putin in Moscow,” the Ukrainian president asserted. This stance indicates Ukraine's refusal to negotiate under the terms currently offered by Russia.
Negotiation Stalemate
Earlier, on January 28, Russian presidential adviser Yury Ushakov suggested Zelenskyy could travel to Moscow. Peskov clarified this point, emphasizing that “Putin did not invite Zelenskyy anywhere on his own initiative.” Consequently, the prospect of a summit remains open in theory, but both sides hold fundamentally different views on the acceptable conditions for such talks.
The impasse underscores the profound difficulties in diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Russia, as they cannot find common ground on a meeting venue. Zelenskyy's rejection of talks in Moscow reflects Ukraine's dissatisfaction with the Kremlin's proposed terms, potentially complicating any path toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Future dialogue may require new platforms or conditions acceptable to both parties.
