Zelensky called the 'cheapest' path to peace.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that NATO is the best and 'cheapest' security guarantee for Ukraine, the USA, Europe, and Russia. He made this announcement during a press conference in Davos.
Zelensky noted that NATO is the most beneficial option for the security of Ukraine, the USA, Europe, and Russia. He cited the size of Ukraine's army, which currently numbers 800,000 military personnel. Without NATO and clear security guarantees, Zelensky believes Ukraine will need a million-strong army, and he asks who will feed it. He calls on Europe and everyone together to support the maintenance of this army.
'Let me explain. Let’s take just one example - the size of the army. We currently have 800,000 military personnel. If there is neither NATO nor clear security guarantees, we need to have a million-strong army. And who will feed a million-strong army? If Europe says that Ukraine defends not only itself but also European values, it’s logical, let’s all together support this army. Weapons, army, their provision...', - he emphasized.
The President emphasized that Ukraine's budget will not be able to sustain a million-strong army. Therefore, he proposes to use Russian assets, which amount to 250 billion, for the restoration of infrastructure and maintenance of the army until Ukraine becomes part of some alliance.
'We simply won’t have enough. And when I am asked about fundraising, about troops, about a million-strong army, I answer: there are 250 billion – Russian assets. We take them: part goes to restoring infrastructure, part to maintaining the army. This is until we are part of some alliance. I am not saying we will be there tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. I just say 'for now', - said the leader of Ukraine.
Zelensky noted that otherwise, the maintenance of the army will have to be financed from the budgets of the USA and Europe. He added that in the USA, they say that this is a war not on European soil, so it’s best to finance the army from European budgets.
Earlier, Zelensky spoke about the number of Russian troops in Ukraine and Putin's plans.
