Europe's Seat at the Negotiating Table

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has laid out a clear condition for involving European nations in future negotiations to end the war. He argued that the most suitable arrangement is the E3 format, which brings together France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. In his words,

“Europe must be present at the talks because it stands on our side. It is very dangerous to simply mediate, because mediators are supposed to be in the middle, but there are no mere mediators here—Russia is the aggressor.”

Zelenskyy also stressed that the question of European representation at the talks ultimately depends on decisions made by the European states themselves. He highlighted the need to include the United States in any negotiation format, noting that

“The U.S. can be part of any format, because in the future we need security guarantees from both Europe and the United States. We will not accept negotiations without them, since the war is taking place on our territory.”

International Backing for Ukraine

On the international front, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson observed that Russia has so far shown no willingness to engage in serious talks to end the conflict. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy held discussions with the leaders of Finland and Norway, covering key topics such as:

  • accelerated delivery of new missiles for air defense systems;
  • establishing a unified European anti-ballistic missile network.

In addition, Ukraine and Latvia signed a defense agreement known as the Drone Deal, signaling deeper cooperation in the defense sector. Zelenskyy also met with Estonian President Alar Karis, underscoring the importance of coordinated action among allied nations amid the ongoing military situation. These steps reflect Ukraine’s efforts to bolster its defensive capabilities and secure international support in the face of aggression.

The push for European involvement in negotiations and the signing of new defense pacts demonstrate a surge in global backing for Ukraine as it contends with continued Russian aggression. Zelenskyy’s insistence on including both the U.S. and European partners highlights the critical role of collective security and joint coordination in achieving regional stability. It also signals that Ukraine is pursuing not only military solutions but also diplomatic pathways to resolve the conflict.
