Next Phase of Peace Negotiations

According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed his readiness for the next round of peace talks, which are proposed to be held in Miami. The potential dates for the meeting are February 17 or 18. However, it remains unclear whether the Russian side will agree to participate. This development follows a recent diplomatic push, highlighting the ongoing international effort to find a resolution to the war.

These discussions would follow trilateral negotiations that took place in Abu Dhabi on February 5, where further steps in resolving the conflict were discussed. While Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated an intention to continue talks, he insisted on doing so with greater distance between the parties. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that specific dates for a new round of peace negotiations have not yet been finalized.

Prospects for a Peace Settlement

Zelenskyy has expressed the view that the war could end within a few months if negotiations continue in good faith. He also emphasized that neither side is enthusiastic about the idea of a free economic zone.

“Ukraine has once again confirmed its position on the issue of Donbas,” he stated.
“If this is our territory—and it is our territory—then the country to whom this territory belongs should govern it,” the president added.

Meanwhile, a draft peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could potentially be prepared by March. Yet, Ukraine's stance leaves questions about the viability of the current negotiation stage, given new demands put forward by the Russian side. Specifically, Russia insists on maintaining distance and has introduced new conditions, which could complicate the peace process.

Ending the war in Ukraine by the summer of 2026 is another topic requiring further discussion, as the chances for a swift resolution to the conflict remain uncertain. The path to peace is fraught with diplomatic challenges, requiring sustained commitment from all involved.

The current talks between Ukraine and Russia underscore the critical role of diplomacy in the ongoing conflict. Zelenskyy's willingness to engage in new meetings signals Ukraine's intent to continue seeking a peaceful resolution despite existing disagreements. Conversely, Russia's position and new demands may hinder progress, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue to achieve a stable peace in the region.
