Statements of the President of Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his opinion on buffer zones during a press conference on August 29. He noted that Ukraine and Russia have already moved heavy equipment 10 km away from each other, effectively creating a buffer zone. The president believes that new buffer zones will not lead to the end of the war.

'Only those who do not understand the technological state of the war offer Ukraine to agree to a buffer zone of 40, 50, 60, I even heard offers of 100 kilometers. Today heavy weapons on both sides of the front are already located at a distance of at least 10 km from each other. Because they are targeted by drones. This buffer zone, which I call the 'dead zone', someone calls it the 'gray zone', already exists. There is no need to be misled by the statements of some fantasists. The buffer zone already exists,' the president of Ukraine stated.

Zelensky also added that if Russia needs a greater distance from Ukraine, they can retreat to temporarily occupied territories.

'We do not need anything for this. If the sides give the command to drones to burn everything at a distance of 20 km, then the buffer zone will be 20 km deep. If at 40 — it will be 40. The corresponding weapons are available to everyone. So there is no need to pull anything anywhere. Look at the front line of the Russian army. Where is the armored equipment there? Where are the tanks? Zero. There is nothing left. No one is advancing because everyone is losing equipment. Day and night, at any moment. Therefore, this is just unnecessary talk. Buffer zones were discussed after 2014. It was during the Minsk process. It was a different war. There was ATO, and there was no technology appropriate to this war. Then there was an agreement on troop withdrawal. And we remember how the troop withdrawal ended,' Volodymyr Zelensky explained.

The president's statements reflect an important moment in the continuation of military actions. The topic of buffer zones has become a subject of discussion, but as experience shows, their creation does not always lead to the desired results. Technological development plays an important role, as does the influence of factors that are constantly changing on the front. Zelensky's words emphasize that the conflict is far from over, and warfare has become more complex and technologically sophisticated.
