Zelenskyy Outlines Divergent Peace Priorities: Security Guarantees First, Says Ukraine, While US Seeks Immediate Deal.
Zelenskyy's Munich Security Conference Press Briefing
According to Novyny.live: During a press conference in Munich on February 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy detailed differing approaches to peace negotiations with the United States. He stated that while the U.S. is pushing for a swift conclusion to the conflict, Ukraine insists on receiving concrete security guarantees as a prerequisite for any agreement. This stance reflects the high stakes for a nation that has been defending itself against a full-scale invasion for two years.
Ukraine's Stance and the Critical Role of Trust
Zelenskyy noted that American officials have been explicit about their desire for a prompt peace settlement.
"The United States of America has told us openly that they want to achieve peace. That is true. They want to do it as soon as possible. We sense they want it much more than the Russians do,"the Ukrainian President emphasized.
He further stressed that mutual trust is a foundational element for any successful negotiations.
"It is better for Ukraine to do this simply for the sake of trust between all of us,"he remarked. Having endured four years of war since the initial conflict began in 2014, Ukraine views security assurances as a non-negotiable priority before signing any formal peace documents. The country's position underscores the profound concerns for its long-term stability and sovereignty in the face of prolonged aggression.
In the context of a multi-year conflict, building confidence between the parties is essential for achieving a durable peace. As a key ally, the United States plays a pivotal role in this process, and its drive for a resolution could significantly shape the course and outcome of future diplomatic efforts.
