Speech of the President of Ukraine

Today, August 27, President Volodymyr Zelensky in his address on the 1281st day of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine emphasized the importance of Russians understanding the seriousness of the international reaction and possible consequences for Russia if the war continues. This was reported by FREEДОМ.

Appointment of a new ambassador to the USA

Zelensky also announced that he has signed a decree appointing Olga Stefanishina as the new ambassador of Ukraine to the USA.

'I just spoke with Olga Stefanishina. I defined the key tasks for updating the work of our embassy, and the main thing is to fully implement all agreements with Washington. Our agreements with President Trump, primarily in the defense sector, depend largely on our relationships with America for long-term security of Ukraine. On the table are two Ukrainian proposals, these are strong proposals. This is an agreement on weapons for Ukraine, and this is an agreement on modern drones for the United States. And we expect quick progress in relations,' noted Volodymyr Zelensky.

Thanks to the previous ambassador

The president expressed gratitude to Oksana Markarova, who represented Ukraine in the USA until now.

'Oksana represented Ukraine in Washington throughout all these years of full-scale war — it is a very difficult mission. And Ukraine has always been heard in the United States. I want to thank for this work. We have already discussed further cooperation, and I suggested to Oksana Markarova to continue to be part of the team, to work for Ukraine,' noted the head of the Ukrainian state.

Diplomatic efforts

Zelensky emphasized that the Office of the President together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Security and Defense Council are activating diplomatic work with partners, proposing a meeting between Ukrainian and Russian leaders to end the war.

'The leaders' level allows discussing key issues — this level is what we need. We all see very brazen negative signals from Moscow regarding negotiations: the Russians do not intend to fulfill what they promised, and they promised the United States of America, promised to others in the world who insist on ending the killings and real diplomacy. We need to exert pressure. We must force Russia to take real steps. Russia must end the war it started and continues. The response from them should be. They must be pressed for the right answer. And this depends on America, on all those who consider this war truly wrong,' emphasized the President of Ukraine.

Preparation for the meeting

Zelensky noted that Ukraine is preparing venues for the meeting and ensuring effective diplomacy.

'Yesterday Andriy Yermak and Rustem Umerov were at meetings in Qatar, specifically regarding mediation issues. Today there were meetings in Saudi Arabia. I thank for the support. Tomorrow — meetings in Switzerland. On Friday — the United States of America, New York, meetings with President Trump's team,' reported Volodymyr Zelensky.

Information on sanctions

Zelensky listened to the report of the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine Oleg Ivashchenko regarding sanctions.

'What next steps in sanctions are necessary, which specific Russian legal entities should be blocked, on which individuals should pressure be applied, what sanction avoidance schemes, unfortunately, still work. All this information, which is available to our foreign intelligence, will be passed on to our partners, primarily from the 'Group of Seven'. They are ready to strengthen sanctions,' stated the Ukrainian leader.

Work of services on the ground

Volodymyr Zelensky also thanked everyone who is engaged in eliminating the consequences of Russian attacks.

'Poltava, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Donetsk region, Zaporizhia, Kherson region — our services are responding everywhere, providing assistance. There were hits to energy both yesterday and last night. We are quickly restoring energy supply. Work is still ongoing,' added Volodymyr Zelensky.

The President's speech focused on important aspects of foreign policy and emphasized Ukraine's readiness to actively engage with allies. The appointment of a new ambassador will be a key step in strengthening Ukrainian-American relations, which are crucial for ensuring Ukraine's security in the context of the ongoing war.

Furthermore, the work of Ukrainian services on the ground is also important, as the restoration of infrastructure and the stability of the energy system remain priority tasks in the context of aggression from Russia. This underscores the joint efforts of the Ukrainian state and international partners in restoring normal life in the country.
