Zelenskyy Warns of Kremlin Goal: Russia Seeks U.S. Recognition of Crimea as Its Own.
Ukrainian President's Remarks on Crimea's Annexation
According to UATV: On February 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Kremlin's intentions, which he said aim to persuade the United States to recognize annexed Crimea as Russian territory. Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine would never accept such a decision, as it contradicts the nation's core interests. He noted that while negotiations between Russia and the U.S. are possible, Ukraine would not support any agreements that could harm its sovereign interests. This stance reflects Ukraine's consistent position since Russia's illegal seizure of the peninsula in 2014.
'I believe Russia is most likely sending a signal to America—recognize Crimea.' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy further emphasized that any decisions concerning Ukraine, if made without its participation, would not gain its support. 'If someone wants to decide for us on issues that contradict the Constitution of Ukraine or Ukrainian law, then Ukraine will not support such agreements,' the president added.
Ending the War and Ukraine's Sovereignty
The president underscored the importance of ending the war, expressing hope for positive changes. 'It is clear that we, for example, want the war to end,' Zelenskyy stated. In doing so, he affirmed that Ukraine reserves the right to independently determine its policies and approaches to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
President Zelenskyy's statement highlights Ukraine's determination to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. It also indicates that the issue of Crimea will remain central to international negotiations, with Ukraine insisting that its interests must be considered. These comments underscore the critical importance of Ukraine's participation in any discussions about its future and demonstrate the resolve of its leadership not to accept compromises that threaten its national interests.
