Zelensky is ready to refuse NATO: what security guarantees the US is offering

According to ТСН: The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, held important talks in Germany with representatives of US President Donald Trump's administration concerning a peace plan. He expressed Kyiv's readiness for compromises, including a temporary postponement of joining NATO in exchange for strong security guarantees from the US to prevent a new Russian invasion.

The talks in Germany became a key stage in the process of ending the war with Russia. In light of pressure from the US to conclude an agreement, Zelensky emphasized his readiness to consider compromise solutions.

Temporary refusal to join NATO

Prior to the meeting, Zelensky noted that Ukraine is ready to temporarily refuse to join NATO in exchange for reliable security guarantees from the US that would help avoid a new Russian invasion. At the same time, he clarified that Ukraine would not agree to the transfer of currently controlled territories.

Zelensky also expects specific details regarding the proposed security guarantees from the US. The negotiations lasted over five hours and may continue in the near future.

During his visit, the President of Ukraine met with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

"In my opinion, the most important thing is for the plan to be as fair as possible — first and foremost for Ukraine, since it is Russia that started this war. And, importantly, it must be viable. The plan should not remain just a piece of paper but become a real step towards ending the war,"
Zelensky emphasized.

Differences between the US and Ukraine approaches to ending the war

There are serious differences between the US and Ukraine approaches to ending the war, which complicate the achievement of compromises. The American proposal entails exchanging territories in eastern Ukraine for peace, as well as requiring Ukraine to abandon its NATO membership aspirations. In contrast, Ukraine's position insists that no territories should be transferred and does not include demands to annul NATO plans in the future.

Zelensky noted that Ukraine is ready to consider a ceasefire along the current front line.

"A fair and viable option is 'we stay where we stand,'
the President said.

Moreover, Zelensky expressed skepticism regarding the idea of a 'free economic zone', as it could mean the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from important territories.

"This issue remains unanswered for now. But it is extremely sensitive and very acute,"
Zelensky noted.

No signals from Putin regarding agreement on the peace plan

As of today, there are no signals from Russian President Vladimir Putin about his willingness to agree to a plan to end the war. He proclaims Russia's victory while continuing attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Zelensky is trying to maintain support from Trump, who has reviewed the US foreign policy towards Russia. The President of Ukraine expressed confidence that the United States is capable of forcing Putin to make compromises to end the war.

"If the United States really wants to end this war — as they are demonstrating today at a high level — I believe the Russians will have to make compromises,"
Zelensky summarized.

The President also noted that Ukraine's initial aspiration was to join NATO for real security guarantees, but this idea did not find support among allies.

Zelensky emphasized that bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the US are a compromise from the Ukrainian side to avoid aggression.

Ending the war in Ukraine remains a pressing issue, and negotiations with American partners could be decisive for the further development of events. It remains to be seen how the efforts of both sides will succeed in achieving peace and stability in the region.
