Zelenskyy's EU Address: A Call for €90 Billion and a Clear Path to Membership.
Ukrainian President's Video Address to the European Parliament
According to UATV: On February 24, 2023, marking the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a video address to the European Parliament. His speech came at a critical juncture in the war, as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty. Zelenskyy called for sustained international support and security guarantees, specifically requesting €90 billion in aid to sustain Ukraine over the next two years.
Addressing the European lawmakers, Zelenskyy stressed the vital importance of receiving a clear timeline for Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
"Today we must be as decisive and strong as we were at the start of the invasion,"he stated, emphasizing the need for resolute action against Russian aggression. The President also warned that any European economic ties that continue to fund Russia only strengthen its ability to prolong the conflict:
"Each of you understands what fills Putin's wallet with money and gives him the opportunity to drag out this war."
Zelenskyy underscored that the situation demands not just a desire to help, but a clear understanding of Russia's strategic aims: "This is not simply a wish. It is a clear understanding of how Putin will act." He also directed a message to the Russian people, asserting that
"Russians must remember that Europe is a union of independent states and millions of people who do not tolerate humiliation and will not accept violence."
An Appeal to the International Community
In this way, Zelenskyy's speech served as a powerful appeal to the international community to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight for independence and territorial integrity.
The address highlights the critical and ongoing need for international backing as Ukraine faces continued aggression from Russia. The call for €90 billion reflects not only the country's immense economic needs but also the importance of a coherent strategy to ensure regional security. This appeal to European leaders underscores the urgency of defining Ukraine's future within the European Union, a decision with significant implications for the political and economic relationship between Ukraine and the EU.
