Why Zelensky Sent the Order of the White Eagle Back to Poland: A Closer Look at the Decision.
Return of the Order of the White Eagle to Poland
According to Novyny.live: On June 20, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dispatched the Order of the White Eagle—an honor previously awarded to him by Polish President Andrzej Duda—back to Poland via the Nova Poshta delivery service. This move came as a response to recent events involving military recognition and the evolving diplomatic ties between Ukraine and Poland. The gesture highlights the delicate balance in relations between two nations united against a common threat but occasionally at odds over symbolic matters.
Zelensky underscored the critical role of Polish solidarity in countering Russian aggression, stating:
“I am proud of our people and every Ukrainian warrior—millions of Ukrainian men and women who deserve undeniable respect for their heroism in defending against Russian aggression”- Volodymyr Zelensky. This reflects the deep bonds between the two countries, both facing similar challenges on the geopolitical stage.
Controversy Surrounding the Award
The decision to return the medal was not without friction. Karol Nawrocki revoked Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle in reaction to Ukraine’s naming of a specific military unit. In turn, Andriy Sybiha and Ihor Zhovkva announced they were giving back their own Polish honors. Additionally, Kyrylo Budanov declined the Golden Officer’s Cross of the Order of Poland.
Commenting on the situation, Zelensky remarked:
“Today I sent the Order to the President of Poland. I believe the future will confirm the respect for Ukrainians”- Volodymyr Zelensky. He also offered his perspective on historical figures, noting: “If it is considered that this special symbol can remain with Catherine the Second, Benito Mussolini, and Gerhard Schroeder, then we in Ukraine will not argue with that.”
Ultimately, the return of the Order of the White Eagle serves as a symbolic act that underscores the complexities in Ukrainian-Polish relations and the importance of international support during times of crisis.
This event highlights both the relevance and intricacy of diplomatic ties between Ukraine and Poland, particularly in the context of Russian aggression. While the return of the award can be seen as a gesture of solidarity between two nations with shared military and political interests, the underlying conflict over the honor reveals tensions that can arise even among close allies. It underscores the need for careful communication and mutual understanding on the international stage.
