Zelensky on Elections: Condition - Ceasefire for 60-90 Days.
According to ТСН: The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reported that currently Ukraine does not plan to hold a referendum on possible peace agreements. Elections can only take place on the condition of a ceasefire and the creation of the necessary security infrastructure.
President's Comment
In response to journalists' questions about elections and public voting in the context of negotiations to end the war, Zelensky noted that the issue of a referendum is currently not relevant. He emphasized that it concerns complex documents and decisions, and the government does not seek to complicate life for Ukrainians with additional political processes during the war.
The Topic of Elections in Society
At the same time, he confirmed that the topic of holding elections is actively discussed in society, especially after the initiative from the United States. Zelensky is ready for elections but emphasizes the importance of their legitimacy.
Conditions for Holding Elections
According to the President, to hold elections, it is necessary to amend the legislation, coordinate the actions of parliament, and most importantly, ensure the creation of security infrastructure. He stressed that elections are only possible in case of a ceasefire for a specified period.
"For this, a ceasefire is needed - for 60-90 days or another term that will be agreed upon with partners. If there is a silence mode, we are ready for elections," Zelensky noted.
Statement from the President of the USA
Recall that the President of the United States Donald Trump expressed the opinion that presidential elections should be held in Ukraine since they have "not been held for a long time".
Zelensky responded that he is ready for elections and appealed to the USA and European partners with a request to guarantee security for their conduct.
Against the backdrop of ongoing negotiations for peace in Ukraine, the issue of elections is becoming increasingly relevant. President Zelensky emphasizes the importance of security conditions for their conduct, indicating a serious approach to processes that may determine the future of the country. Further actions by international partners, particularly the USA, could significantly impact stability and security in Ukraine.
