Zelenskyy Issues Ultimatum to Belarus: What It Means for the Fate of Key Signal Relays.
Decline in Drone Incursions
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine has observed a notable drop in the frequency of drone flights originating from Russian territory and crossing through the Chernihiv region. Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, reported that
“for about a week, border guards have recorded a certain decrease in the intensity of Shahed drone incursions.”
Ultimatum to Belarus
Amid escalating military tensions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an ultimatum to Belarus, demanding the removal of four signal relay stations used to coordinate strikes against Ukraine. This occurred on June 19, 2023, when Zelenskyy emphasized that
“I think a week will be enough for him to do this. If he doesn’t do it, we will.”The ultimatum was a direct response to Russia’s attempts to draw Belarus into the war, a concern Zelenskyy had first raised on May 15, 2023.
On June 15, 2023, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko apologized to Zelenskyy for his harsh rhetoric, highlighting the strained relations between the two nations. By June 22, 2023, Zelenskyy confirmed that Belarus had received Ukraine’s demands through unofficial channels. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assesses that these relay stations constitute legitimate military targets for Ukrainian strikes, signaling Ukraine’s readiness to retaliate against threats from both Belarus and Russia.
The reduction in drone activity may reflect tactical shifts by Russian forces, as well as the effectiveness of Ukraine’s countermeasures. At the same time, Zelenskyy’s ultimatum to Belarus underscores Ukraine’s vigilance toward potential threats from its neighbors and its willingness to take decisive action. This situation highlights the growing regional instability and the critical importance of international security amid the ongoing war.
