Zelenskyy Orders Daily Emergency Meetings to Tackle Ukraine's Energy Crisis.
Daily Emergency Meetings to Manage the Power Grid
According to UATV: In response to widespread blackouts caused by Russian attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on January 15, 2023, the establishment of daily emergency coordination meetings to manage the national energy system. These attacks have left citizens without power for 20 to 30 hours per day, creating severe hardship. This decision underscores the critical state of Ukraine's infrastructure, which remains a primary target in the ongoing conflict.
Zelenskyy stressed the importance of these daily morning briefings, where the government must tackle urgent tasks like increasing electricity imports and securing backup power. In discussions with Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Air Force Commander Anatolii Kryvonozhko, they addressed the challenges of restoring the energy grid under such extreme conditions. The President also noted the need to find solutions regarding curfew hours to help businesses better plan their operations.
Aid for the Hardest-Hit Regions
Special attention was directed toward regions suffering the most from the attacks, including:
- Kyiv and the surrounding region
- Kharkiv and the surrounding region
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast — the cities of Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih
- Zaporizhzhia
- Sumy
- Chernihiv
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need to bolster support for Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and Odesa, and also discussed diplomatic efforts with the United States. The introduction of these daily emergency meetings aims to improve coordination in combating Ukraine's energy crisis.
This move by Ukraine's president reflects the dire situation in the energy sector, a direct consequence of military actions that severely impact daily civilian life. The daily briefings are designed to ensure a swift governmental response to challenges facing the power grid and to promote more efficient use of resources for restoring electricity. Strengthening aid for the affected regions is a crucial step in mitigating the aftermath of these attacks and rebuilding stability in the country's energy infrastructure.
