Ukraine’s President Proposes Domestic Production of Patriot Missiles Under US License.
Ukraine’s Appeal to the United States
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has formally requested permission from the United States to manufacture Patriot missile system interceptors in Ukraine under a licensed agreement. The proposal was submitted to both the White House and the U.S. Congress, driven by concerns that current global production levels of these critical air defense munitions are insufficient to meet Ukraine’s needs.
At present, Ukraine produces just 60 to 65 anti-ballistic missiles monthly—a figure President Zelensky described as wholly inadequate given the scale of ongoing threats.
“60–65 anti-ballistic missiles per month, compared to the current challenges, is nothing”he stated. The issue was first raised on May 27 in a letter to then-U.S. President Donald Trump, where Zelensky highlighted the critical shortage of Patriot system missiles.
Urgent Need to Expand Production Capacity
Zelensky’s appeal underscores the pressing requirement to ramp up manufacturing capabilities to bolster national defense. Given the persistent threats, closer defense collaboration with the United States in this area could represent a pivotal step toward strengthening Ukraine’s security framework.
- Increased missile production volumes are urgently needed.
- Ukraine seeks to deepen defense cooperation with international partners.
- Licensed production would advance Ukraine’s domestic defense industry and enhance its strategic autonomy.
This initiative reflects not only Ukraine’s immediate demand for more missiles but also its broader ambition to intensify defense ties with global allies. Establishing licensed missile manufacturing would be a significant milestone for Ukraine’s defense industrial base, reducing reliance on external supplies. Given the persistent threat environment, this matter holds critical importance for both Ukraine’s security and regional stability.
