Military Infrastructure Grows in Belarus—But Is There a Troop Buildup Near the Border?.
Military Infrastructure Expansion in Belarus
According to UATV: Ukraine has reported that military infrastructure in Belarus is expanding under Russian influence. However, according to Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, there has been no observed increase in the number of troops near the border with Ukraine. He noted that
“fortunately, we are not recording any buildup of strike forces near our border, nor any reinforcement of military units, equipment, or personnel”.
Regional Situation
Available data confirms that military and transport infrastructure is indeed being expanded on Belarusian territory. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has released maps and satellite images that corroborate these developments. Additionally, he has called on Minsk to remove Russian military equipment from Belarus.
It is also worth noting that relay stations in Belarus stopped operating on June 22, 2023, which may signal shifts in the region’s information and military landscape. Yet, according to Andriy Demchenko, there are currently no grounds for concern regarding an increased military presence near Ukraine’s border.
The expansion of military infrastructure in Belarus highlights Russia’s activity in the region, which could affect Ukraine’s security situation. Despite this, the absence of a significant troop buildup near Ukraine’s border offers some grounds for cautious optimism. Monitoring further developments in the region remains crucial, as the situation can change rapidly depending on political and military decisions made in Moscow and Minsk.
