Ukraine Ramps Up Bohdana Production to 40 Units Monthly: What This Means for the Frontline.
National Guard of Ukraine Defensive Operations
According to UATV: On the Kupiansk axis in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine's National Guard is holding defensive positions with heavy reliance on artillery. Among the systems in use, foreign-made units like the Zuzana 2 stand out, operated by the 13th National Guard Brigade 'Khartyia.' Domestically produced artillery also plays a major role, with the Bohdana howitzer now accounting for roughly 40% of all artillery pieces deployed at the front.
Production Targets and Mission Diversity
In October 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to scale up Bohdana output to 40 units per month, highlighting the system's growing importance to national defense. The commander of a DITA self-propelled howitzer, call sign 'Mason,' noted that
“the targets National Guard troops strike with artillery can be completely different,”underscoring the wide range of missions artillery crews handle in combat.
Notably, the Bohdana crews are not composed of career soldiers. As a crew commander with the call sign 'Toyota' explained,
“there are no military personnel in my crew. Everyone came from civilian life—some were miners, others worked in factories or enterprises. None had prior military service.”This reflects the broad mobilization of civilian talent into the National Guard during wartime.
Currently, the National Guard of Ukraine continues to deploy both foreign and domestic artillery systems side by side, strengthening its frontline positions and defending key sectors.
This situation underscores Ukraine's significant efforts to bolster its defensive capabilities, including through the adoption of new technologies and the integration of civilian specialists into military service. The critical role of artillery—especially the Bohdana system—highlights the need for rapid adaptation and modernization of military infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of modern combat.
