According to ТСН: Dr. Nick Norwitz, a Harvard and Oxford graduate, conducted an impressive experiment by consuming 1000 sardines over 30 days. He aimed to find out whether such a diet could serve as an alternative to full fasting and speed up metabolism without losing muscle mass.

Norwitz, a specialist in metabolic health and a lecturer in Boston, wanted to test how a strict diet consisting solely of sardines would affect fat loss and health improvement while preserving muscles.

“Sardines — with skin, bones, and everything else — are a natural protein bar and multivitamin in one,” Norwitz noted in a YouTube video published at the beginning of the month after completing the 30-day experiment.

Throughout October, he consumed an average of three cans of sardines a day, meticulously recording changes in weight, ketone levels, omega-3 numbers, and physical activity.

“I wanted to see if they could provide the benefits of fasting without its downsides,” Norwitz explained.

At first, Norwitz only ate sardines, but later began to add olive and MCT oils to maintain energy. He also started using salt to support water balance and replenish electrolytes.

Results of the Sardine Diet

“Honestly, adding fat changed everything dramatically. It was four days after I started using olive oil, and I felt much more energetic — like night and day,” Norwitz shared midway through the experiment.

Throughout the diet, he noted that he felt 'light' and 'strong.' The researcher mentioned that his endurance was 'limitless': he easily climbed 37 flights of stairs without any difficulty.

By the end of the experiment, Norwitz had lost six pounds (about 2.7 kg) and achieved a high level of omega-3, as indicated by blood tests.

“My blood looked more like a dolphin's than a human's,” Norwitz joked.

The scientist concluded that the sardine diet provides the body with protein, omega-3, and other beneficial substances that help maintain muscle mass and activate metabolism.

The Main Drawback of the Experiment

According to Norwitz, the main downside was the unpleasant smell, as it indeed resembled a 'fish market.' His partner even remarked: “You smell like you’re sweating fish.”

The researcher also shared that he measured the frequency of kisses before and after eating sardine meals.

“I recorded kisses as data points... But honestly, I stopped tracking after five days because that number fell to zero. ... That was a big minus,” Norwitz shares.

Despite this, he continued his diet, occasionally replacing sardine dinners with outings with friends where seafood was served.

The doctor emphasized that the sardine diet could be worth the experiment for those interested in fasting, but noted that this approach is not suitable for everyone, especially those with low body mass.

Norwitz also pointed out that the effects of excessive omega-3 levels on the human body are still not well studied.

“If I had to eat just one food, it would be sardines. They are almost a complete food: bioavailable protein, quality omega-3s, and a wealth of micronutrients. Moreover, it is one of the fish with the lowest mercury content,” explained the researcher.

In conclusion, he stressed that the only reason he doesn’t consume them daily is due to potential consequences for his personal life.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in the U.S. noted that the impact of omega-3s depends on the type of fatty acids, their dosage, and individual health, so research in this area continues.
