According to UATV: On March 21, 2023, Russian forces launched a large-scale assault on Ukraine, deploying 154 attack drones of various types. Preliminary reports indicate that around 90 of these drones were Shahed models. Ukraine's air defense systems proved highly effective, neutralizing or suppressing 148 of the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The attack originated from multiple launch sites, including:
- Oryol
- Kursk
- Millerovo
- Primorsko-Akhtarsk
- Hvardiiske (Crimea)
This incident follows a previous strike on March 20, when Russia targeted the Zaporizhzhia region, killing three people and wounding four others. The back-to-back attacks highlight the sustained intensity of hostilities.
According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, 'as of 08:30, preliminary data shows that air defense forces have shot down or suppressed 148 enemy UAVs.'
The situation underscores the ongoing military conflict and heightened tensions in the region. This assault reflects an escalation in the war between Russia and Ukraine, where drones have become a critical component of military operations. The destruction of a significant number of UAVs demonstrates the growing capability of Ukraine's air defense systems, which are actively responding to aerial threats. At the same time, the events in the Zaporizhzhia region reveal that civilian casualties remain high, emphasizing the humanitarian toll of the conflict.
