Power Restrictions Take Effect in Ukraine on March 17: Who Will Be Affected.
Ukraine Faces Scheduled Power Cuts on March 17
According to Novyny.live: On March 17, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Ukraine will enforce power capacity limits for industrial users. This measure stems from damage inflicted on the country's energy infrastructure by Russian strikes. Ukraine's national grid operator, Ukrenergo, announced:
“Tomorrow, March 17, across all regions of Ukraine, power capacity restrictions will be in place from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.” - Ukrenergo
Residents are urged to shift heavy electricity usage to daytime hours, specifically between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. This strategy aims to ease the burden on the grid during peak evening demand. Ukrenergo also stressed:
“Please avoid running multiple high-power appliances simultaneously in the evening!” - Ukrenergo
Resilience Plans and Infrastructure Recovery Efforts
Additionally, on March 14, 2023, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree directing the creation of resilience plans for cities and regions. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported that Ukraine is actively sourcing equipment from European nations to repair its thermal power plants.
To date, Ukraine has restored 3.5 GW of generation capacity out of over 9 GW lost due to Russian attacks.
These actions are part of the Ukrainian government's broader strategy to maintain grid stability amid the ongoing war. The evening consumption limits are designed to minimize the risk of blackouts, which could disrupt industry and daily life. The development of resilience plans and the procurement of recovery equipment highlight Ukraine's efforts to adapt to the crisis and rebuild its energy infrastructure.
