Thousands of Kyiv Residents at Risk of Losing Compensation for Destroyed Homes

According to Novyny.live: In the wake of escalating Russian shelling, as many as 20% of Kyiv residents who have lost their homes may be left without state compensation due to flaws in the current system. According to Kyrylo Fesyk, head of the Obolonskyi District State Administration, existing restrictions could prevent a significant number of victims from receiving the aid they are entitled to. This issue has become especially urgent following the May 24 attack on Kyiv, which destroyed a dormitory in the Darnytskyi district, leaving 74 apartments in ruins and many families homeless.

Fesyk highlighted that

“around 20% of those affected could remain excluded from the compensation mechanism under current limitations.”
This means that despite their dire circumstances, not all victims can count on government support. He further noted that
“the current compensation system generally works, but it needs changes so that all victims can receive help.”
These remarks underscore the growing public concern as countless people struggle to rebuild their lives amid ongoing conflict.

Why the Compensation System Must Be Reformed

This situation underscores the urgent need to review and improve state support mechanisms for war victims. With destruction mounting during the protracted conflict, ensuring universal access to compensation should be a top priority for the government to help people restore their lives. Lessons from other countries that have endured similar crises could offer valuable insights for crafting more effective solutions in this area.
