According to The Sun: A forgotten airport in the UK is set to reopen its doors, receiving funding of £160 million, which is a significant achievement.

South Yorkshire council leaders approved financial plans that will allow planes to take off from the runways again.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) closed in 2022 when its owners announced it was no longer financially viable.

Efforts to revive the airport failed last month when South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard admitted that 'it is impossible to say when it will reopen again.'

This comment came after previously announced revival plans that included £30 million from the UK government for the refurbishment project.

Not long ago, Transport Minister Heidi Alexander visited the airport, raising hopes that passenger flights could return as early as next year.

“We are ready for take-off”

Today, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) held a meeting at the airport to finalize the financial plan.

At the meeting, Oliver Coppard and four council leaders in South Yorkshire unanimously supported a funding package of £160 million for the restoration of the runways.

In his speech delivered on Tuesday, he stated:

“We are ready for take-off.”

However, planes will not take off immediately, as the airport will fully operate only in the summer of 2028.

However, winter 2027 could see the beginning of 'limited' operations for passengers and cargo.

The airport, which was previously owned by private owners, will now transition to public ownership.

Since its closure, there has been a campaign by the Doncaster local council and others, including the central government, to restore the airport.

Funding will be allocated to the Doncaster local council for the restoration of the airport through Fly Doncaster, which is owned by the council, reports The Yorkshire Post.

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones, who actively supported the revival of the airport, said:

“This is an important day in the history of our airport. Today we have taken a big step forward towards the complete restoration of our airport.”

She added:

“This project is not just for the restoration of the airport for passenger flights, but also for improving the economic situation, creating a hub for the aviation industry, providing jobs and opportunities for our residents, and putting Doncaster back on the map.”

“A great achievement”

The restoration of Doncaster Sheffield Airport is planned as the creation of a “world-class” sustainable aviation and manufacturing hub.

This restoration is expected to drive new investment and development in the region, creating thousands of jobs and boosting the economy by £5 billion.

Finance Minister Rachel Reeves noted:

“The reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport is a major achievement for communities and businesses across South Yorkshire, providing better connections, jobs, and economic growth.”

Doncaster Airport operated for less than 20 years, opening in 2005 under the name Robin Hood Airport (the name changed in 2016).

The airport once offered flights to 50 destinations, including Paris, Majorca, Alicante, Berlin, and Dubrovnik.

Among the airlines that operated here were Flybe (which ceased operations in 2019), Wizz Air, and TUI Airways.

MP for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme Lee Picher confirmed in July that he is in negotiations with Ryanair and TUI about returning to the airport.

Passenger flights are expected to resume at the airport in 2028.

The restoration of Doncaster Sheffield Airport is significant for the region, as it will not only restore aviation connections but will also become an important driver of economic growth. Local residents eagerly await the economic improvements and new opportunities that will arise from this project. The airport could become a significant part of South Yorkshire's transport infrastructure, contributing to the region's development and attracting new investments.
