Azerbaijan may lift the ban on arms supplies to Ukraine: reaction to Russian attacks.
The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has commented for the first time on the Russian shelling of Azerbaijani SOCAR facilities in Ukraine. This happened after a conversation with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to the official website of the President of Azerbaijan, during the conversation with Zelensky, Aliyev opposed the Russian airstrike on the oil depot and the shelling of the SOCAR gas compressor station near the borders of Romania, which ensures the transportation of Azerbaijani gas to Ukraine. The parties also discussed bilateral relations between the countries.
Arms supplies for Ukraine
According to Caliber, due to Russian attacks on SOCAR, Azerbaijan may consider lifting the arms embargo for Ukraine. In the event of further Russian attacks on Azerbaijani infrastructure in Ukraine, Baku may allow the supply of weapons from its reserves.
The latest strike on SOCAR
On the night of August 8, Russian occupiers struck the SOCAR oil depot in the Odesa region using strike drones. A phone conversation between Zelensky and the leaders of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan took place on July 10, and earlier Azerbaijan, along with Armenia, signed a peace agreement during the mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ukraine and Azerbaijan discussed the Russian shelling of SOCAR facilities and the possibility of arms supplies in the event of further Russian attacks. Russian actions to the detriment of the Azerbaijani company may have geostrategic consequences. It is worth noting that these actions occurred after telephone negotiations between the leaders of the countries.
