These changes are occurring against a backdrop of increasing online banking usage.
Since 2015, banks and building societies have closed over 6,400 branches, averaging about 53 closures per month.
Sam Richardson, Deputy Editor at Which?, noted that the closures represent a “seismic shift” in how Britons use banking services.
If your local branch is closing
There are several ways to obtain basic banking services without having to travel to another town:
You can use one of 11,684 post office branches to carry out simple banking transactions, but you won't be able to open new accounts or take out personal loans.
Many banks also offer mobile banking services, where a bus comes to your area, allowing you to receive services typically available at physical branches.
Additionally, some banks are using premises such as village halls or libraries to provide mobile banking services.
It is recommended to contact your bank to find out about the available mobile services and their schedules in your area.
What services do banking hubs offer?
Banking hubs offer a variety of services to fill the gap left by the closure of local branches.
They assist customers with routine transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, and balance inquiries.
Each hub has private booths where customers can discuss complex banking issues with their bank representatives.
Staff from various banks are available on a rotational basis, providing customers with a wide range of banking services throughout the week.
Furthermore, customers can receive advice and support on various financial products and services, including loans, mortgages, and savings accounts.
The closure of bank branches reflects a trend driven by the growing popularity of digital services. Customers can adapt their banking activities to the new conditions by utilizing alternative forms of service.
These changes affect people, especially in rural or sparsely populated areas, where access to banking services becomes even more limited. It is important for customers to stay informed of developments and be able to adapt to the new realities of the financial landscape.
