Inspections at Ukrainian Fuel Stations

According to TSN.ua: In response to a fuel price surge that began on February 28, the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU) has launched inspections of gas stations. The investigation will examine potential anti-competitive practices in the fuel market, with requests for information already sent to the largest retail networks. This probe comes as Ukraine's economy faces significant pressure from both the war and global energy market volatility.

The price increase became pronounced in Ukraine on March 4, which was 14 days after a 10.5% price hike occurred in Europe. Data indicates purchases of A-95 gasoline rose by 40–70%, while diesel fuel costs surged by 60–140%. These substantial market shifts necessitate a detailed analysis by regulators.

Causes of the Price Hike and Its Consequences

Energy expert Pavlo Kyrylenko noted that the primary objective factor driving prices higher is Ukraine's reliance on imported oil products. Following the shutdown of the country's largest oil refinery, approximately 85% of light oil products now depend on imports. Kyrylenko also stressed that the current market situation cannot be compared to the conditions at the start of the full-scale invasion.

The AMCU's investigation could be a crucial step toward ensuring fair fuel prices and restoring competition in the Ukrainian market, which would directly impact consumers and businesses nationwide. The probe reflects growing concerns about price stability and may lead to changes in market regulation policy. Ukraine's dependence on imported fuel, set against a backdrop of global price fluctuations, underscores the critical need for robust domestic market competition. Consumers can hope for more transparent pricing and improved fuel access in the near future.
