Archaeologists Unearth a 2,500-Year-Old Stamp Seal in Poland.
Discovery of an Ancient Artifact in Poland
According to TSN.ua: During rescue excavations in 2011 near the village of Nienowice, close to Jarosław, Polish archaeologists uncovered a unique clay object approximately 2,500 years old. This artifact, potentially the first of its kind found in the country, was discovered at a settlement site that was occupied between the 6th and the 3rd–2nd centuries BCE, highlighting the area's historical significance.
Cultural Contacts and the Artifact's Significance
The site was initially inhabited by communities of the Pomeranian culture, with Jastorf culture bearers arriving from the 4th century BCE onward. The artifact, standing 4.3 cm tall with an irregular pyramidal shape, is classified as a 'negative type' stamp seal, or pintadera. Such objects typically date to the 6th and early 5th centuries BCE. Pintaderas are rare finds in Central Europe, making this discovery particularly noteworthy for understanding ancient networks.
This find is crucial for mapping early cultural exchanges in the region.
“The artifact most closely resembles a pintadera,” stated archaeologist Marcin Burghardt.
Another researcher, Konrad Sawinski, emphasized that “the region in the Early Iron Age was an important center of cultural contacts.” The clay stamp is now part of the permanent exhibition at the Jarosław Kamienica Orsettich Museum, allowing the public to view this significant historical object.
The discovery provides vital insights into cultural interactions and the development of communities in what is now Poland during antiquity. Studying such artifacts helps archaeologists better understand how different cultures influenced each other and how knowledge and traditions were exchanged. The artifact's museum display underscores the importance of historical research in preserving the region's cultural heritage.
