Ukraine's Security Service Dismantles Fake Job Scheme for Draft Dodgers: Hundreds of Exemptions Sold for $5,000 Each.

Widespread Fraudulent Employment Operation Uncovered

According to Espreso.tv: Ukrainian authorities have cracked down on a large-scale operation in which military-age men were fraudulently employed solely to obtain exemptions from military conscription. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) arrested eight individuals involved in this scheme and exposed additional related crimes across multiple regions. Eight suspects were taken into custody during the operation.

The scheme, which operated for over two years in the Sumy region, involved organizers falsely registering conscripts as university lecturers. Through this arrangement, roughly 200 men secured deferrals from mobilization. To broaden their reach, the organizers renewed a Kyiv-based educational institution's license and established a branch in Lviv.

Arrests and Revelations

Each fake job placement cost up to $5,000. Law enforcement executed 30 searches at various locations, underscoring the operation's scope. Among those arrested are:

• A female director of a private educational institution;
• Two lawyers who facilitated the fraudulent employment process.

Separately, in Kharkiv, police detained a lawyer who organized fake jobs at a critical infrastructure company. In Rivne, officials uncovered a medical expert who falsified patient histories to grant draft exemptions. A man in Cherkasy region was arrested for selling guardianship status. In Ivano-Frankivsk, three individuals were caught illegally smuggling conscripts across the border.

Additionally, a blogger in Dnipropetrovsk region was found spreading information about the locations of mobile military checkpoints, raising further security concerns. All suspects have been formally charged under multiple articles of Ukraine's Criminal Code, facing up to nine years in prison plus asset confiscation.

The SBU continues its aggressive campaign against unlawful draft evasion schemes. On June 6, authorities reported blocking six new channels used for illegal border crossings, demonstrating ongoing systemic enforcement efforts in this area.

The exposure of these fake employment rings highlights the severity of draft evasion in Ukraine, particularly amid active military operations.

These law enforcement actions may serve as a warning to others considering similar schemes, given the harsh penalties involved. This situation also underscores the need for tighter oversight of hiring practices in educational institutions and businesses that could be exploited for fraud.
