US Air Force buys Tesla Cybertruck: not for combat, but for target shooting.
Elon Musk's dream is coming true, as the Tesla Cybertruck will be used by the US military, but not in the way he envisioned. The US Air Force plans to acquire two pickups for target shooting.
This was reported by Electrek.
Expectations
Tesla CEO Elon Musk marketed the Cybertruck as bulletproof and designed to survive an apocalypse. He suggested it could be used by the military and even directly proposed the electric pickup to the US armed forces.
Considering that the Cybertruck turned out to be a commercial failure and Tesla is currently struggling to sell it, the automaker may benefit from the order from the American military.
Indeed, the US Air Force Test Center (AFTC) intends to acquire 33 target vehicles, including two Tesla Cybertrucks, for delivery to the White Sands missile range in New Mexico.
Reality
The military plans to use these vehicles as targets for precision weapons. Why do they need two Cybertrucks? A document obtained by The War Zone indicates that the Tesla pickups could be used by a potential adversary. The training objective is to prepare units for operations by simulating scenarios as close to real situations as possible.
Perhaps the American military was struck that one Cybertruck somehow came into the possession of 'infantryman Putin' Ramzan Kadyrov, who mounted a machine gun on it and claimed that the vehicle would go to fight in Ukraine.
Regardless, the army's order for pickups is good for Tesla. All possible channels for selling the Cybertruck are needed, as it is currently selling at a rate of 20,000 per year, while Musk aimed for at least 500,000.
The American military plans to use the Tesla Cybertruck as targets for precision weapons, attempting to bring scenarios closer to real situations. This could be a beneficial deal for Tesla, which is struggling to sell the Cybertruck in the commercial market.
