Drone Attack on Gas Tanker Off Romania Leaves Crew Injured and Evacuated.
The Attack on the Gas Lisbon Tanker
According to UATV: On July 21, 2023, the Liberia-flagged gas tanker Gas Lisbon was struck by a drone while sailing from Egypt to the Ukrainian port of Reni, approximately 20 nautical miles from Romania's coastline. Romanian President Nicusor Dan confirmed that the crew was evacuated, with three members sustaining injuries during the operation. All those hurt were safely brought ashore, Dan stated.
This incident unfolds amid heightened regional tensions linked to ongoing military hostilities. Just two days earlier, on July 19, 2023, Russian forces targeted another vessel named GOLDEN LEO, resulting in five fatalities and five individuals reported missing. These attacks highlight the serious threats to maritime security in the Black Sea, a critical waterway for global shipping.
Navigational Safety Risks Intensify
Andriy Sybiha, a maritime industry representative, emphasized that
“the Russian war poses dangers not only to Ukraine but also presents risks to the freedom of navigation.”His remarks capture growing alarm over the situation and its potential impact on international shipping routes.
The strike on the Gas Lisbon tanker is thus part of a broader security crisis at sea driven by military conflicts. Recent events demonstrate that navigation hazards remain severe, demanding close attention from the international community.
These Black Sea incidents underscore the perilous environment for maritime transport in the region. As such attacks could disrupt global trade lanes, countries relying on these waters may need to reassess their safety protocols. It is crucial for the international community to address these challenges, as regional stability is vital for the world economy.
