Heart Transplant Saves Father of Two Soldiers Following War Anniversary Heart Attack

According to TSN.ua: Ihor Koverko, a 56-year-old resident of the Lviv region, suffered a critical heart attack on February 24, 2025, the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. The attack left his heart functioning at only 20% of its normal capacity, necessitating urgent medical intervention. He was placed on the organ donor waiting list in the summer of 2025 and finally received a life-saving heart transplant on January 17, 2026.

The complex surgery was performed by cardiac surgeons at the Center for Transplantology. Following the successful procedure, Ihor Koverko underwent intensive care and rehabilitation. He expressed profound gratitude for this second chance at life:

“This transplant is my chance to be with my children again, to see my future grandchildren, and to return to a normal life,” said Ihor Koverko.

Both of Ihor Koverko's sons serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, adding a layer of national and familial significance to his recovery. This story highlights the critical importance of medical advancements in Ukraine and their direct impact on citizens' lives during a period of immense national strain.

Advancements in Ukraine's Medical System

This case reflects not only the personal struggle of the Koverko family but also the broader context of Ukraine's healthcare system, which continues to develop despite the profound challenges of war. Progress in transplantology, in particular, demonstrates a growing capacity and quality of medical services, which is vital for patients requiring urgent, high-level care.
