Belgium to Deliver Seven F-16s to Ukraine by Year-End: What You Need to Know.
F-16 Fighter Jet Delivery to Ukraine
According to UATV: Belgium intends to provide Ukraine with seven F-16 fighter jets before the end of 2024, as announced by Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken on June 18, 2023. These aircraft are part of a broader Western effort to bolster Kyiv's air capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia. According to Francken, the delivery will be split as follows:
- four jets designated for spare parts,
- three jets for active use in Ukraine.
Francken stated:
“Regarding Ukraine, we are scaling up our assistance. This year, we will deliver seven F-16s to them.”He also emphasized that the timeline hinges on Belgium’s receipt of its own F-35 fighter jets:
“It depends on the availability of the F-35 [in Belgium].”
This move underscores Belgium’s continued commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts by supplying advanced military hardware. The delivery of F-16s represents a significant boost to Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, particularly as it faces ongoing aerial threats.
The transfer of these fighter jets marks a critical step in strengthening Ukraine’s air force, reflecting growing international solidarity from Western nations determined to help Kyiv defend its sovereignty. The condition that deliveries are tied to Belgium’s receipt of F-35s highlights the intricate logistics and coordination required among allied defense partners.
