BitMEX Announces Exchange Closure

According to Мінфін — Крипто/Фінанси: BitMEX has revealed its plan to fully cease operations on September 23, 2026. Since its launch in 2014, the platform was among the earliest venues for trading cryptocurrency derivatives and played a key role in popularizing perpetual futures contracts with leverage of up to 100x. The company has now decided to wind down its business gradually.

Timeline for the Exchange Wind-Down

The phased shutdown will follow this schedule:

  • Starting July 23, 2026, no new accounts will be accepted.
  • From August 26, 2026, users will be unable to open new positions.
  • The exchange intends to close existing positions gradually until September 23, 2026, when platform operations will end.

After the exchange closes, users can still log into their accounts and withdraw assets. However, a monthly fee of $50 or 1% per year—whichever applies based on the amount—will be charged for holding assets on the platform. This marks the end of BitMEX, though users retain the ability to manage their funds until the final shutdown.

As one of the first and most influential crypto derivatives exchanges, BitMEX's closure highlights evolving regulatory pressures and shifting competition in the cryptocurrency space. Many traders accustomed to high leverage and innovative tools may now need to explore alternative platforms. This development also underscores a broader trend of increased oversight by regulators, which could reshape the entire industry.
